Financial Fall: Labor Day Weekend Sales; From Clearance to Clear-Out.

 

Fall CleaningLabor Day weekend landed on the first weekend on my Financial Fast. As I tried to find alternative ways to have a good time and not spend a dime, the email and text alerts about all the fantastic deals and sales in stores were sooooo convincing. I thought about all the things I could possibly purchase if I was spending money, along with just ditching this whole fast thing and cop the latest Nike Roshe Runs.

While I prepared for the weekend and brainstormed of all the things I could do, I ran across a post about the benefits fall cleaning has on your health and your pockets. At that point, I was sold. Staying home and getting my life together was definitely in my budget! A non-cost, high productive activity.

This was no easy task. I’m sure we all dread stepping into our closet and noticing all of the clutter and mess that the racks hold. We dread the millions of shoe boxes that are thrown everywhere. But I held strong and committed.

Cleaning and organizing your closet is not only a great way to save money, but it also de-clutters your actual life! It gets rid of the things that you do not need and allows you to see what you absolutely need in order to have a functioning wardrobe.

My biggest challenge during this clear-out was forcing myself to give things away. I continued to use statements like, “I could wear this on a rainy day.” or ” this would fit me eventually.”, when the reality of it was I never planned to wear that and it would sit and take up space in my closet. This is important in de-cluttering. WE MUST LET GO! Letting go will not only provide us with more space, but it will also leave us to things we only need. And just like this financial fast, we are beginning to step foot in a process of only keeping things that we need. No worries yall, it is ok to let go of those favorite jeans that cant fit you anymore. I promise.

My labor day clear-out not only left me with a solid list of essentials that I will need for the Fall season (tights, cardigans, sweaters, dresses, etc.) but it also is the starting works of creating a habit of making a way with my own things, knowing exactly what I need in a store, making a list of the essentials, and planning and budgeting properly how much these items were, instead of walking in a store without a clue and picking up pieces that i did not really need.

So not only am I starting the Fall season with an organized closet and a clear mind, but I removed the pressure of shopping during one of the  most daunting sale time in the summer, Labor Day Weekend.

Financial illiteracy has plagued and largely impacted the African-American community for many generations. Most of us are lacking when it comes to the understanding of how money works and how to efficiently manage and build wealth. Our impoverished communities continue to rest in this state because there is no transfer of wealth. Wealth continues to be held and dominated outside of our communities because of our low receptivity to financial literacy. Though the tides are beginning to turn on this matter as awareness grows, we as a people still have quite a ways to go. How do we regain prosperity? How do we bring it back to our communities and families? How do we protect it and keep it? How do we go from “new money” to “old money?”

Every great accomplishment begins with careful and strategic planning. While planning may be the answer, it may NOT be the solution. Integrated financial planning as the answer only becomes the solution when it is followed through. You need a plan, it begins with a plan! Wealth building is an ongoing process of structured forced, systematic, efficient and consistent saving habits.

While having a generous income does help, it is not entirely about how much money you make or the lack there of. It is about having the discipline to start today with a meaningful amount that you can commit to monthly or annually regardless of your economic status. Truth is there will always be a reason or rather an excuse NOT to save or invest. You have to conquer that need of immediate gratification by giving up the things you want now, to invest in what you will need in the future. Don’t put it off any longer because there is a huge cost in waiting. Time is our most valuable asset as well as our biggest liability. Due to compound interest of returns over time, essentially the more time you have or the sooner you begin to save, the less it will cost you to achieve your financial goals.

Find a trusted and competent advisor to help you with your financial planning. Google makes it very easy to self-educate, so I am sure that most of us are well capable of doing our own planning. One of the biggest reasons that I recommend you leave it to a professional is that we all have emotional attachments to our money, believe it or not. When it comes to money most of our decisions are made based on emotions and feelings, rather than logic. I have found it to be very helpful to have a fellow colleague as my advisor even though I am in the profession as well. It gives you someone to hold you accountable and to help take out the emotions to make sound financial decisions.

This is my last bit of advice and what I believe will catapult your finances to new unseen levels; pay God first. First and foremost, even before you save or spend, pay God what is due to him. As a devout Christian, I believe that being a faithful tithe payer is imperative to our financial success. With EVERY increase the bible says to give10% to the house of the Lord. In fact it is one of the few areas in our lives that God says “TEST ME!” (Malachi 3:10).

Restoring Your Chilly Season!

Self Empow.

I always find that the colder seasons allow me to reconnect with my purpose in life. I mean, I’m not able to sit on the beach or be outside as much, so I am now reluctant to be faced with, well, me. And it is clear that everyone can relate.
During this reflective time, following a  few guidelines in making sure that my hibernation season is effective as possible. Here are some tips:

 

1. Self Empow. 5Saving money: Although the holidays are quickly approaching, we want to remind ourselves that although we want to spend uncontrollably for our loved ones, they will still love us the same if we bought the 16GB IPhone instead of the 32GB. Becoming more knowledgeable about money and learning how to save more, invest more, and ultimately make more, is always a good skill to rely on. Besides, who wants to be broke anyway? Getting an upper hand on your green by learning some things during the fall and winter time. And stay tuned on our site, we might even help you reach your financial success!
2. Cleaning house: Yup, Exactly what I meant. Your space. It’s getting colder now, who wants aSelf Empow. 2 cluttered space? Take a weekend (or two) and begin organizing, disposing, and rearranging things in your home, room, car, office, etc. It pays off to have a clean space, especially when you feel that life is cloudy and cluttered with mental and even physical THINGS. Control what you can and CLEAN HOUSE! Trash things that you don’t need, organize things that you do need, and you will thank us later! De-clutter that mind and embrace your hibernation season with a little winter cleaning.

Self Empow. 3.Recovering connections: Even though it is cuffing season and everyone wants to call and remember the old friendships and old flings that was once started, it’s always best to reconnect with old, GENUINE, friends and family members that you missed during the summer nights with friends or loud music at concerts. Recovering connections can also allow you to get in conversation about things you would have never talked about through the basic text message or the small comments on Facebook and Instagram. Get creative with reconnecting! Have small get-together or coffee dates with the VIP’s in your life and reconnect! You will be amazed at the relationships and friendships you will make.
4. Self Empow. 4Becoming productive: With all this extra time on your hands, you can always do a little more with your productivity. Digging deep and finding that special hobby that you once loved will be great during this cold season. Whether it’s curling up with a good book, writing your life away, cooking up good eats, or even that blog site that you never get to, do it! It is never too late to catch your forgotten hobbies. Being productive with the things you like to do will only cross some things off your mega to-do list, but it will also bring you that inner happiness that is comparable to those warm, eventful summer days.

5. Having Fun! There’s nothing like having a boring chilly season. Being bored AND cold is not too much fun. Just remember that although the warm season is months away, use this time to find your inner peace and happiness.

Fall Care. For the Cold Season.

Sweaters, boots, hoodies, Thanksgiving, Halloween, falling leaves, pumpkin spice ?!?!? Yes, pumpkin spice. If you haven’t noticed yet, fall is here and it is here to stay. Along with the perks of Fall, our bodies and minds have to adjust to this transitioning season.  Although it is hard to let go of the blazing sun and the great ordeals of summer, Fall brings great things. We promise!

  1. Vitamins Double Time:

    A diet rich in antioxidant vitamins and nutrients can boost immunity to help fight infection.
    Top antioxidants include vitamins C and E, plus beta-carotene and zinc. To get enough of these antioxidants in your diet, step up the intake of unprocessed fruits and vegetables. This isn’t realistic for everyone, with obstacles like budget constraints and busy schedules. Thankfully there are many supplements for these antioxidants at your local drug store, which come in the form of chewy candy, gum, pills or drinks.
  2. Rest Up:
    Our T-Cells or T lymphocytes count decreases when we are sleep deprived. These cells play a major role in the mechanism of our immune system. Getting adequate amounts is imperative – usually 7 to 9 hours for an adult.
  3. Water, Water, Water!:

    As if AfroMadu doesn’t stress this enough, too little fluid in our body hinders the efficient working of the blood and lymph systems which reduces energy and contributes to a sluggish feeling.  You’re probably thinking about when you can get to your next cup of coffee or warm apple cider but you need to stay hydrated, and the only way to properly do so is with water! Eight to ten glasses a day is recommended.

4. Exercise:Regular exercise increases the level of leukocytes, an immune system cell that fights infection. Exercise also is associated with increased release of endorphins, natural hormones that pump up your sense of well being and improve sleep quality, both of which have positive effects on your immune system.

5. Hygiene: This goes without saying, wash your hands often! Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer on deck! Keep a pack of tissues on hand!

The Power of Now Becoming Powerless.

Here at AfroMadu we take pride in preaching and discussing “The Power Of Now”, but have the ideas of thinking for today became too much? Are people just simply thinking about now and not their near future?

Our society THRIVES off the idea of  being “on-the-go”, making everything and everyone so hip to moving in a fast pace. We eat on-the-go meals and fast foods, make time commitments where we rush everywhere, have road rage because traffic  is too slow for our liking, and overall make temporary decisions for our permanent plans.

“The Power of Now” is the simple reasoning of not worrying about the past or the future but for living and loving everything in the “now”. In our society it’s pretty hard to worry about how to live now and enjoy every momnet without worrying about what needs to be done in an hour or what you plan to do for your birthday next year.

Living in the now can also level your head to what’s important and beneficial to the process of self discovery. And besides, whats soo good living in the past when you have a present to worry about????

Although this seems like a blasphemous concept, there are extremes to the Power of Now. Allowing yourself to act in a uncontrollable manner because you are living in the now, is beyond extreme and detrimental to the rest of your life. Let me explain…

This new on-going trend of  “YOLO” (You Only Live Once), has people going bonkers. There have been many crimes committed and lives ended because living in the now went too far. 

But should life really draw down to that? When you finally feel like you are comfortable with being grounded and secure in the present that people must live a life of extreme partying and crime? Do we drear away from the now because of what can potentially happen?

This Fall season, don’t let YOUR Power of Now become wasted or miscued. Live the present life that you were always supposed to live. Be comfortable in  understand and accepting that NOW is really the only thing you can have. LIVE FOR NOW!
