We are so excited to share with you this month’s book!

Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing has been the latest rave in the world of literature and we thought it would be super awesome to have our readers right in!

IN ADDITION TO OUR AUGUST BOOK RELEASE, AfroMadu has teamed up with Urban One Radio to host a #BookClubMadu BI-WEEKLY PODCAST!!!!! Yes, a podcast to talk about books, culture, and everything in between. How cool is that?!?!?

Here’s how this month’s book will work:

-Discussions will be held on afromadu.com and on twitter, @afromadu.Throughout the week, we will be posting questions and quotes from Homegoing. 

-On August 14th, we will host our very first show, highlighting the first portion of the book. Readers are able to email us thoughts and questions about the book. Submission emails must be in before Thursday, August 11th.

Between The World And Me, And Every Other Black Man.

More times than others, I read books that compliment my moods. If I am happy, I will not even think to touch a Toni Morrison, but rather consider some work from Maya. When I want to feel hopeful, Ill grab Zora Neale. And on a rainy day, shade is usually being thrown from Richard Wright and Audre Lorde.

But I didn’t get a chance to choose this book, it just happened. And I realized that I not only read the book at the right time, but so did everyone else. And that was because we had no choice.

I took my seat on the Ta-Nehisi Coates’ bandwagon and I don’t think that I will ever get off. In fact, I might have to bully someone for their front seat  because his new book, Between The World and Me, helped heal my temporal fury.

The overall purpose, a letter to his son, was more than I can bare. The thought of constructing a letter that contained all the problems to Black male existence and not even giving a solution, because there is none that you can possibly provide, shows me all the revolutionary steps needed in the awakening  process.

The idea of the body; existing physically, biologically, politically, and socially, was extremely necessary to digest. The consequences of not living  causes disembodiment. Both self-inflicted and inflicted, in which you have no control over. The tennis game of Coates analyzing his manhood versus raising a child to challenge manhood was extremely striking.

And the responsibility of mustering up a narrative that share Black America’s grief has already been acknowledged by one of the finest American writers ever, Toni Morrison.

‘The modern-day James Baldwin’ comparison straps this author with an extreme high award of valor, because someone has to fill the shoes. And Coates, with his blunt references and his bold opinions does nothing less than remind you of our Uncle Baldwin himself.

This is no ordinary book review, because this is no ordinary book. I usually include fancy quotes and witty remarks, but it is nearly impossible to choose quotes that are more important than others.

I found myself in a salsa of emotions during my time reading because it is reflective of the current happenings in the world. This book does not put you in some kind of fairy tale land that you are able to get away from once you close the book. The reality is, the book is just as dark as the world we share.

Go ahead, it is safe to pick up.

Natural Hair Tips for the Summer.

Well ladies, Summer has arrived. Is your natural hair ready? Summer comes with fun outdoor activities so AfroMadu wants to make sure your hair looks both beautiful and healthy! I will be giving you some tips on how to keep your hair beautiful, free of frizz or damage, and protect it from the harsh sun!

Tip 1: Don’t Fight your Hair! Don’t waste your time this summer trying to do twist-outs because it will turn intoBlackhair1 a big fro-out. Instead of that I suggest wash-n-go’s or any other style that goes with your hair texture. Protective styles such as; braids, Havana twist, quick weaves, or any updo’s are very good for the summer time. Styles as such will keep your hair from your face and neck which will keep you cooler.

Tip 2: Co-Washing is a MUST! If you already co-wash, do it more frequently in the summer. It gets rids of all that sweat and chlorine from the pool fun you are having. After co-washing, shake and go and have fun in the sun.

images-140Tip 3: LOTS OF HATS! Natural hair can be so unpredictable, especially in these humid Summer days. Hats are a great accessory that goes with any and everything. I suggest beanies, sunhats, or even caps. 

Tip 4: NO HEAT STYLING! Heat from the sun plus heat you apply to your hair is just doubling the damage. Instead embrace your hair texture and try protective styles and wash-n-go’s. 

Tip 5: Hydration is KEY. Make sure you are hydrated inside and out. Please drink the appropriate amount of water in oz. every day. Also
 remember to hydrate your hair with water daily, it’s the best moisturizer.

Tip 6: Oil, Oil, Oil!  While enjoying your summer on the beach remember to keep your hair moisturized. Theimages-142 sun’s damaging rays made fade your color and leave your hair feeling like a straw texture. I recommend you use Argon oil, “raw” Shea butter, Jojoba Monoi Oil, and whipped coconut oil.

 images-143Tip 7: What to sleep on? Sleep on a satin pillowcase or a pillow bonnet to look in the moisture in your hair. This also helps prevent breakage and protects your hair from the damaging summer weather. A satin pillowcase also helps not only your hair but also your skin    

 Tip 8: Moisturize. Ladies after being in the sun for so long make sure you keep your hair moisturized. Apply a hydrated leave-in treatment such as a leave in conditioner that will make your hair softer, free from frizz, and manageable. Deep conditions are recommended every two weeks to rejuvenate your hair .   

 Tip 9: Protect your hair before you swim! Coat your hair with conditioner before diving into a chlorine filled pool or salt water ocean. It’s better to fill your hair strands with proteins and moisturizers. Chlorine and salt can change the color of your hair and cause it to become excessively dry and susceptible to breakage.

Tip 10: EMBRACE YOUR SHRINKAGE!!!! Ladies the summer is when you will be experiencing the most shrinkage but embrace every bit of it. Shrinkage isn’t all bad because it’s your hair’s way of protecting itself from losing moisture.

Quick Tip: Split Ends

It is hot! How many styles can we put in our hair to stay cute, cool, and cunning to make our hair grow? There are dozens yet one thing most people forget after washing their hair between styles is to clip their ends.

 

Clipping one’s ends helps hair to grow strong and healthy. Similar to grass, if one does not cut it the grass will get long but it will look stringy and unhealthy. Our hair is just like that. If we do not cut our ends then our hair will look stringy and unhealthy-that is one style you do not want for the summer.

Recommendation: Get your ends clipped every 6 weeks or at least between hair styles that you keep in for months. This way your hair will grow and flow once the winter comes around.

Summer’s Hottest Workout: The Plank.

No need to kill your neck doing sit-ups or buy expensive machines in hopes of strengthening your core any more! The latest fad of the plank allows you to do this basic exercise practically anywhere and anytime. But what are its benefits?

The body’s core is essential to human health. It develops posture, stability, and a start to becoming a better walker or runner. Core exercises help to support our back and abdomen, which is key in something we need especially with the running around and on-your-feet life that we live today.

The plank satisfies all of the back and abdomen needs as well as helping the pelvic and hip floors, and shoulders and arms. Did i mention that it tones your legs in great places along with the sculpting of your abs?!?

They are different modifications of the plank to challenge the body and strengthen different areas as well. Planking in the position of using the forearms is great, but raising this workout and using hands to stay up is quite a challenge! What about planking on a side and using one arm to balance the core? The plank is super beneficial!

So how can you incorporate the incredible plank into your lifestyle? Super easy. Start with a plank for 30 seconds. Take a mini break and continue. try it for 5 times, then repeat for the next day, hiking up the seconds you plank for and the amount of times you do it. You will never go wrong with it!

Ain’t Nobody Got Time For This: Protective Styles for the Heat

So it’s time to find ways to save our natural hair during the heat. Before I cut my hair, I too struggled with how to preserve my natural hair from sweating out. One style in particular that complemented me was 2-strand twists. As you will get to know me-I am all about getting the cutest styles with the smallest amount of work. So after washing my hair I would twist it while it was still damp. If your hair begins to dry out while twisting simply spray water on it to get the moisture back in it. The beauty of 2-strand twist is the versatility of having 2 different hairstyles. You can keep the twist in for 1 week then rock the crinkle/fro look for another week.

Most African Americans have dry hair whereas; Caucasians have oily hair. This explains why they need to wash their hair multiple times throughout the week. Our hair being the blessing that it is, we do not have to wash our hair every week but we do need to keep it moisturized. For example, putting grease, oil sheen, and moisturizers in our hair on a weekly basis helps it to grow, remain healthy and shine. While you are protecting it from the sun-remember to nurture it as well.

Styles to avoid every day are buns. Even though buns are most convenient for natural styles it wears and tears on your hair. The pressure of the bun breaks off your hair slowly which leads to breakage. Save your bun for those days when you do not have much time to do your hair at night or in the morning.
